One of the most recent international artists to hit the scene and quickly become a Jazz Giant is that of Esperanza Spalding. She is a great bassist, vocalist and composer. She has already won several awards including receiving the coveted best new artist award at the fifty third Grammy’s. Her self titled 2008 debut of, “Esperanza” was a smash hit and topped the Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart for several months and quickly became that years best selling Jazz album world wide.
She did so well that she even caught the eye of the just then elected President of the United States, Barack Obama. In that same year Obama had just been elected for his first term as President and it was discovered that he was jamming out to what else; Esperanza Spaulding of course!
After making his appreciation of this artist known the President then went on to invite her to appear both at the White House and the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony. This truly was a great year for Ms. Spaulding. She goes from obscure to having the leader of the free world as her number one fan!
She has also performed with critical acclaim at the 84th academy awards and has shown up with an appearance on the late show with David Letterman. Spaulding is also an activist and promotional leader for the cause of the arts and supporting education and standing up for social justice. She is truly a masterpiece musically and personally and with all of these great things going for her she truly deserves to be our international artist of the year.
